We are well into reading the curious incident of the dog in the night-time by Mark Haddon.  We have discussed Autism and Aspergers, we have watched part of Rain Man, and we have worked through some content questions for the first chapters of the novel.

Today we had a reading quiz on what we have read up to the end of chapter 139.  We then discussed 5 general questions on the novel and you chose 3 of them to respond to on your blogs.  These posts should be complete for next class, which isn’t until Tuesday, November 13, 2012.

You will also need to respond to at least 3 of your classmates’ posts.

We began with some silent reading today.  You also met briefly with your Lit Circle group to decide on your reading schedule.

Lit Circle Dates:

May 22

May 30

June 7

June 13

Remember that you want to be able to participate fully in your group’s discussions so keep up with the reading schedule you decided together.

We then finished reading Act 3 of The Crucible, took a few notes, and then worked on a few discussion questions for Act 3.  (they are on the handouts page)  These questions are due next class.  You can expect a quiz and we will also be doing a blog post.

Today we had a quiz on Act 1.  This was a simple opportunity for you to make sure you are “on track” with the play.

We also worked on a review of Act 1 so that we can be sure we are following the action of the play.  It is important to understand the series of events leading up to the “calling out” so that we understand the motivations of the characters.  A copy of the review is on the handouts page.

Last class we took some notes together on the symbolism in the first act of The Crucible.  If you were away, be sure to get these notes from a classmate.

We then went to the computer lab to begin working on a response journal on Act 1.  Your response journal will be posted to your blog.  this time I would like to see you take your blog posts to the “next level” by adding hyperlinks or images in your blog posts.  This will be especially effective in part 2 where you discuss the connections you made while reading the play.

We continued working on our response journals today.  Don’t forget that you will need to comment on at least 3 of your classmates’ blog posts.  Your comments need to be more significant than “good job” or “I agree.”  These comments are encouraged, but you need to follow them up with specific references to their post.

You blog posts should be complete for Monday and don’t forget that you also have a quiz on Act 1 on Monday.  If you can’t remember the criteria for a response journal you can find it on the Handouts page of this blog.

Today was the last day for class time to complete your pre-reading assignments forThe Crucible.  Remember that you can use your notes for the quiz on Thursday.  The quiz is out of 25 marks but you will also hand in your notes so that I can adjust that mark if you did quality research but did not know the answer to one of the questions.

We will begin reading the play next day, so remember to bring it to class.
