Don’t forget that Thursday your Quotation Journals are due and you will be doing an in-class write. You may use your novel and any notes you have in your notebook. You will have time for some editing and peer review during our next class.
The writing topics ask you to consider a theme from the novel and how it is developed. There is one about language and communication, one about perceptions, one about organization… hmmm… is that enough hints?
Remember to avoid just summarizing the story – you want to discuss the theme and how it is carried throughout the novel. You will want to use specific examples to support your points.
We are quickly approaching the end of the novel. Be sure that you are keeping up with the reading schedule and working on your quotation journal. You want to start thinking about the “why” of this novel. Why did we read it? Why is it an important piece of literature? What did we learn? What connections do I make between the novel and my experiences/other learning? These questions will be important to consider for your in-class write at the end of the unit.
We had a work period last day to finish up blog posts and work on your quotation journals. I notice, after reviewing your blogs, that many of you have not posted your 3 responses to the “deeper” questions we were discussing. This needs to get done this week, please.
Be sure to review your reading schedule and to work on your quotation journal a little each day.
We are well into reading the curious incident of the dog in the night-time by Mark Haddon. We have discussed Autism and Aspergers, we have watched part of Rain Man, and we have worked through some content questions for the first chapters of the novel.
Today we had a reading quiz on what we have read up to the end of chapter 139. We then discussed 5 general questions on the novel and you chose 3 of them to respond to on your blogs. These posts should be complete for next class, which isn’t until Tuesday, November 13, 2012.
You will also need to respond to at least 3 of your classmates’ posts.
I handed out the unit schedule today. It is also available on the HANDOUTS page. I realize I put November 1st instead of 2nd but it shouldn’t make a difference.
In class today we looked at a variety of articles and information about Autism and Aspergers. You needed to read 4 of the articles, look for key points, and note things you were still unsure about. You should also comment on what you learned and what you are now wondering about the novel.
Next class we will be watching some excerpts from Rain Man.
HERE is the unit schedule – it is also on the HANDOUTS page.
We finished up our responses to quotations from The Power of One today. Remember you should print out a copy of your response as well as post it to your blog. I want to have the opportunity to give you some more specific feedback on your writing mechanics.
Today I also handed out copies of the curious incident of the dog in the night-time, by Mark Haddon. I hope you will enjoy this novel as much as I do. On Monday you will receive a reading schedule and we will begin our pre-reading with some discussion about autism and Aspergers.
