Congratulations to the students who represented the grade 12 class at the speech festival – Betsie, Katelyn, Branden M., Erika, Erica, and Colin. All of the students did an amazing job!
We have a few stragglers to finish speeches but for the most part, we are done. Today we worked on creating a character chart for The Crucible. You want to describe the characters’ personalities and then find “evidence” from the play to explain how you know the character demonstrates that trait.
Next class we will begin reading Act 2.
We have had the pleasure of listening to some awesome speeches this week! It really does demonstrate that the process of participating in oral presentations pays off, as is it very evident that you are all practiced public speakers by grade 12. I am very impressed!
We will be selecting 4 or 5 students to represent the grade 12 class at our school Speech Festival on Tuesday, May 14th.
On Monday we will finish up the speeches and then continue our discussion of Act 1 of The Crucible.
We have now finished reading Act 1 of The Crucible. Some important things to make note of:
- major themes – hypocrisy, guilt, revenge, authority, hysteria, integrity/courage
- atmosphere – fear created by witchcraft, bleakness, it is tense and somber
- in a sense, the entire play is an historical allusion
- use of backstory
- lots of foreshadowing
- allagorical narration
- key “players” in Act 1 – Parris, Abigail, Hale, Putnams, Proctor, Rebecca
- important conflicts – Abigail vs the Proctors, John Proctor vs himself
Don’t forget that our two classes next week will be devoted to speeches. Those of you not attending the music festival with jazz band need to be prepared to present your speech on Tuesday, May 7th, the remaining speeches will be on Thursday, May 9th
Because so many students were on the Physics 11/12 Playland trip, we used this class to work on speeches or to finish the Crucible pre-reading inquiry questions.
Just a reminder that several of you will be gone for Jazz Band on May 7th, our scheduled first day of speeches. Those of you not in Jazz Band can expect to do your speech on that day – those of you in Jazz Band will do your speech on May 9th.
We have class both Thursday and Friday this week. We will be reading Act 1 of The Crucible. To make the most of this oral reading experience, it is best if you have pre-read the material. You can expect that everyone will read aloud at some point during our study of The Crucible 🙂
Today you received a print-out of your term 3 mark. Remember to check it over carefully for errors or omissions. If you have any questions do not hesitate to come see me. Your mark should never be a surprise.
After silent reading we began talking about our speech topic…
As I move on to this next phase of my life…
We brainstormed possible ideas for the speech and then you were given time to work on it. Don’t forget that we will begin presenting our speeches on May 7th. Your speech should be 4 to 5 minutes long.
Next class we will begin discussing The Crucible, by Arthur Miller.
Your Kite Project was due today. Those of you who did not hand it in today only have until Monday to hand it in as the end of term is next week.
Today we passed around 5 discussion topics that will become your in-class write topics on Tuesday. The topics were:
- Is Amir a selfish character? Does he redeem himself?
- Can you bury the past or will it come back to haunt you?
- Our childhood experiences determine who we become.
- betrayal and redemption
- Hero of The Kite Runner? Amir or Hassan?
Don’t forget that for your in-class write you may use any notes you have in your binder as well as your novel. You may also work on these topics over the weekend so that you will be prepared with ideas to respond to the write options. You will only write on ONE of the topics.
Up next will be speeches and The Crucible.
For the last two classes you had the opportunity to catch up on missing assignments, finish reading the novel, and complete your final quotation response that should now be posted to your blog. The instructions for the quotation response are on my Kidblog page. Don’t forget to also comment on three of your classmates’ blog posts.
In the last week you received a list of term 3 assignments and a print-out of recorded marks so far this term. Today was the deadline for handing in those missing assignments. Don’t forget that you need to have the novel finished for Friday and your kite project is also due that day. These will be the final term 3 assignments.
Today we wrote Found Poems from The Kite Runner. We did the first “sample” poems together from pages 28 and 29 of the novel. You were to find 8 interesting phrases that you could use to create a 2-stanza, 8-line poem titled “Amir and Hassan”
After this, you began your found poem assignment that you will be posting to your blog next class. You are to write a poem of a minimum of 20 lines. It can be any form, and does not have to be divided into stanzas. Remember that a found poem uses words and phrases from another work – you should not change the words and you are not looking to make lines from individual words – you might as well just write your own poem then 😉 At the end of your poem you include your name, as the author, and then write – as found in The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini. Don’t forget to give your poem a title.
I hope everyone had a restful spring break. I know I enjoyed some pleasure reading – I managed to read four books on my holiday to Arizona.
Now that we have returned you will find these last few months fly by. You will also feel your graduation fast approaching. Now is the time to dedicate yourself to the best possible work you can do.
You should be reading beyond chapter 14 of The Kite Runner now and you should also be considering options for your kite assignment. (a copy of the assignment is on the Handouts page)
Today we had a reading quiz and then considered some discussion questions in our book club groups. Be sure you can comfortably discuss all of the questions. Next class we will be working on a found poem using the novel.
