We have now finished reading Act 1 of The Crucible.  Some important things to make note of:

  • major themes – hypocrisy, guilt, revenge, authority, hysteria, integrity/courage
  • atmosphere – fear created by witchcraft, bleakness, it is tense and somber
  • in a sense, the entire play is an historical allusion
  • use of backstory
  • lots of foreshadowing
  • allagorical narration
  • key “players” in Act 1 – Parris, Abigail, Hale, Putnams, Proctor, Rebecca
  • important conflicts – Abigail vs the Proctors, John Proctor vs himself

Don’t forget that our two classes next week will be devoted to speeches.  Those of you not attending the music festival with jazz band need to be prepared to present your speech on Tuesday, May 7th, the remaining speeches will be on Thursday, May 9th
